An opportunity to conduct research that has a real-world impact on policy

Queen’s University Belfast, in collaboration with the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), invites applications for an exciting PhD studentship exploring how age-related changes in vision and cognition impact driving behaviour in older adults.

This innovative project addresses a critical gap in evidence for road safety and policy development. Using data from the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal study of Ageing  (NICOLA) - Northern Ireland’s flagship longitudinal study of ageing - alongside comparable cohorts, you will identify key predictors of driving cessation, evaluate a modified fitness-to-drive assessment, and incorporate qualitative insights from in-person focus groups of older adults and families.

The studentship includes front-loaded placements with the Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland, offering unique exposure to policy and legislative processes around driver licensing and road safety. You will learn what it is policy makers want from research, which will inform the research questions we ask of the data. You will gain unparalleled experience at the intersection of clinical research, public health, and policy, working within vibrant academic networks and engaging directly with government partners.
