Queen’s is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions and we have increased the energy efficiency of our buildings, significantly investing in the installation of renewable and low carbon technologies. Our new One Elmwood building provides an opportunity to further ensure that sustainability continues to be at the core of the University.

As the home of our Student Centre and Students’ Union, the building will reflect the most up to date sustainability know-how to provide a net zero-ready building that is future-proofed for generations to come. One of our key requirements for the fabulous new One Elmwood building was to make sure we were integrating the most sustainable ways of operating it and incorporating sustainable practices and areas where possible.

Many of the design solutions used in the building have made use of really interesting techniques to help minimise energy use, including a heat recovery system and clean air circulation. We have also integrated solar panels and our purchased electricity comes from 100% renewable sources.

At Queen’s, we are always looking for ways to do more to support our environment - from integration of renewables to swift nest box calling systems - and we are thrilled that we have managed to include a green roof on the One Elmwood building, which overlooks the iconic Lanyon Building.

This is an evolving building, and we will continue to look at practical ways that it can play its part in contributing to our net zero journey and promoting biodiversity across campus.
