Agriculture is one of Northern Ireland’s largest industries and is a cornerstone of the local economy. With Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) figures released in 2019 indicating that the local agri-food sector turns over close to £5 billion each year.
Already known for high quality of food production, Northern Ireland’s agri-food sector is working to meet the needs of consumers both at home and abroad. Producers are working to increase productivity in a sustainable and environmentally responsible manner at every stage of the supply chain.
With a diverse pool of talent experienced in working to address challenges faced at a local and global level, the alliance between Queen’s University Belfast and the Agri-Food & Biosciences Institute (AFBI) will enable both organisations to play a significant role in ensuring Northern Ireland’s agriculture, environment and food systems remain innovative and globally competitive.
