INTRODUCTION TO THE SCHOOL
The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences has always been a major cornerstone of the University and both its work and its graduates have been recognised nationally and internationally. It plays a vital role in the training of doctors, dentists, and biomedical scientists and in providing leadership in basic and clinical research.
The School’s mission is to be internationally recognised for its excellence in health research and educational provision in training the next generation of doctors, dentists, and biomedical scientists, with significant impact on healthcare and wellbeing locally and globally, through enhanced partnerships and collaborations.
The School, which is the largest in the University, is managed and delivers its education and research priorities through its three Education and three Research Centres.
Supported by national and international partners, the School has benefitted from investment of over £100m on both the Health Sciences and Royal Victoria Hospital campuses. This modernisation and expansion of the School’s estate has enabled the co-location of researchers in Centres of established excellence, including cancer, respiratory, infectious, and eye diseases and in public health alongside the education Centres for Medicine, Dentistry, and Biomedical Sciences. There has also been very significant investment in clinical infrastructure to support clinical trials, including a UK Clinical Research Collaboration registered Clinical Trials Unit and a Wellcome Trust - Wolfson Clinical Research Facility.
Most research carried out at the School is undertaken in the Centre for Public Health, the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, and the Patrick G Johnston Centre for Cancer Research. During the last 5 years they have secured over £150Mfrom high profile funders, including BBSRC, MRC, EPSRC, National Institute for Health Research, and major UK charities such as the Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK, Cancer Research UK among others.
The Centres focus on major global health challenges exploiting multidisciplinary approaches. These health challenges affect low, middle and high-income countries, providing a global dimension to our research. Academics work in close collaboration with clinical research leaders and industry to develop high quality, coordinated translational and experimental medical research programmes. This will create further opportunities for the development of spin-out companies and educational opportunities for future generations of health professionals and researchers.
Significant additional achievements over the last five years are:
- The development of a new, innovative, integrated undergraduate medical curriculum beginning in 2020
- The establishment of the Precision Medicine Centre of Excellence
- The School achieved an Athena SWAN Gold Award in October 2020
- Establishment of the Postdoctoral Development Committee in 2016
- Excellent National Student Survey scores
- Provision of support for the development of a new medical school in Dubai (MBRU)

Our undergraduate programmes in Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, delivered through our three Education Centres in collaboration with our health partners and with our Research Centres, provide an exceptional, life changing experience. In the 2020 National Student Survey our three undergraduate programmes scored an average of 91% in terms of overall student satisfaction. Over the years the School has developed very close partnerships with the Northern Ireland Department of Health, and Health and Social Care Trusts / Primary Care, ensuring a close working relationship between us and our colleagues in the Health Service. Indeed these partnerships have been made even stronger by the creation of educational Sub-Deaneries located within the Health Trusts that ensure much greater integration and participation between academic and clinical colleagues in the education and research process. The School is driven by a commitment to enhance and improve the quality of life and health care available to patients across Northern Ireland and the UK through the development of high-quality coordinated research programmes and enhanced educational opportunities and training for future generations of doctors, dentists, scientists and researchers.We deliver exceptional opportunities for training at postgraduate level (Masters and Doctoral) and all our students benefit from an intellectually challenging environment, first-class academic resources and infrastructure and a culture of innovation. The development of research programmes in education and the fostering of interprofessional education research and activity are important objectives for the School.
