Attendance at this event is free for colleagues in UK higher education. For people outside UK HE there is a charge of £50, though priority will be given to HE colleagues.

This event brings together UK academics who teach or want to teach dramaturgy and dramaturgs/ theatre practitioners. It aims to develop networks between those teaching dramaturgy in higher education in order to discuss what is being taught in this field across the UK currently, sharing resources and teaching ideas.

Dramaturgy in Higher Education in the UK – an overview

- What is being taught under the title ‘dramaturgy’? What sort of UG/PG modules or courses?

- Who is teaching it/where?

- What resources are we using?

- Are we training ‘dramaturgs’ or teaching ‘dramaturgical consciousness’?

Key themes/questions

- What differentiates a module on ‘dramaturgy’ from other modules (which clearly all deal with dramaturgy in some way)? What do we mean by ‘dramaturgy’?

Isn’t almost everything we teach actually dramaturgy: composition, structure, text, light, sound, cultural resonances, theatre history, genres …?

How to develop ‘dramaturgical consciousness’?

When we teach courses on dramaturgy what are we assessing and how are we assessing it?

‘Where should we start the training? With the classical canon? Is there a contemporary canon which in the same way must be taken into account?’ (Peter Boenisch, from the documentation of the 2007 European Dramaturgy in C21 forum).

10.10 Session 1: Keynote -Cathy Turner (Senior Lecturer in Drama, University of Exeter) and Synne Behrndt (Lecturer, University of Winchester)

11.00 - 11.30 Refreshments

11.30 Session 2: 3x 15 minute provocations about different approaches we have:what we teach under the name 'dramaturgy' and how we teach it. Mary Luckhurst (Professor in Modern Drama, University of York), Peter Boenisch (Senior Lecturer, Theatre Studies, University of Kent) and Alyson Campbell. Chair Duska Radosavljevic Followed by collecting a set of questions from the floor.

1.30 Session 3: Working groups responding to the questions.

2.45 - 3.15 Coffee

3.15 Session 4: Feedback from groups and a round table with all the guest speakers.

4.15 Event wrap up.

We'd like to invite everyone attending to send or bring a module outline or brief page outlining how they teach dramaturgy. This would be a way of starting a survey/discussion/study of what is taught as dramaturgy in the UK.

Directions
The Brian Friel Theatre is located in the Drama and Film Centre at Queen’s University, at 20 University Square, close to the main entrance to the University, on University Road. The main campus is a fifteen minute walk from the city centre.
By Air
There are two airports serving Belfast:
George Best Belfast City Airport is three miles from the city centre, connected by rail (Sydenham - Great Victoria Street).
Belfast International Airport is nineteen miles from Belfast at Aldergrove. A shuttle service connects with the city centre, operated by Ulsterbus.
By Sea
A selection of routes and ferry operators are available. Belfast is most easily reached from the following ports:
Belfast Port is located 1.5 km from the city centre and can be reached by bus, taxi or on foot.
Larne lies 32 km east of Belfast, with bus and rail connections.
By Rail
Rail connections are available from both UK and Dublin.
By Road
All ferry ports are well connected by road. Within Northern Ireland, motorways link Belfast with the north and the west of the Province, and the Westlink between the M1 and M2 and a city ring road make it easy to navigate Belfast's traffic system. A good road link connects Belfast with Dublin in the south.

There is limited street parking near The Brian Friel Theatre but the main Campus is easily and quickly reached from the city centre.
