Systems Mapping Event
Introduction to systems thinking and complexity science for food in schools. The GENIUS School Food Network will be conducting an online Systems Mapping training session for members
ON: Wednesday 24th November 2021
AT: 4pm
PLATFORM: Zoom
Many public health advocates have recommended strengthening the systems necessary to implement effective and coordinated action to improve the UK school food system. In order to achieve this, this workshop aims to provide an introduction to systems thinking and complexity science approaches, including the evidence base for a systems approach, as well as educate participants about the necessary tools for implementation and evaluation.
Workshop participants will meet to share knowledge and learn from experts on how to utilise a systems approach to strengthen multi-sectoral implementation of interventions and evaluate their impact. System thinking and complexity science (STCS) represent a vast multi-disciplinary field of established and emergent concepts and methods that can be used to address the inherent challenges of healthy school food provision.
Aims of the workshop:
- Introduce systems thinking and complexity science concepts and methods in public health
- Develop and enhance knowledge in applying systems approaches to evidence-based policy making, to strengthen multi-sectoral implementation and upskill participants in healthy food in school implementation
FACILIATORS
Ruth Hunter is a Professor in the Centre for Public Health at Queen’s University Belfast. She is co-lead of the Complexity, Urban Environment and Public Health Research Group at QUB, and an expert consultant for the WHO on complexity science and NCDs. Ruth is a co-investigator on the UKPRP GENIUS Network, the UKPRP PHASE Network and Director of the newly funded UKPRP GroundsWell Consortium. She is particularly interested in the application of systems thinking and complexity science methods in public health, in particular using social network analysis and agent-based modelling approaches.
Leandro Garcia is a Lecturer in the Centre for Public Health at Queen’s University Belfast. He is co-lead of the Complexity, Urban Environment and Public Health Research Group, and an expert in the application of systems thinking and complexity science in public health issues. His research combines epidemiological and complex systems approaches and methods to investigate the links between behavioural, environmental, social, and policy determinants of population health.
