Attendees included global experts in clinical research in critical care, emergency medicine and perioperative medicine, as well as methodologists and statisticians, with the aim of disseminating major trial results to improve patient outcomes worldwide.

The driving force behind the Critical Care Reviews Meeting 2025 was Professor Rob Mac Sweeney, Honorary Professor of Practice from the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen’s University Belfast and Consultant Intensivist in the Regional Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

The conference was chaired by Queen’s University critical care experts Professor Bronwen Connolly, Dr Jon Silversides and Dr Peter McGuigan from the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, with Professor Danny McAuley acting in an advisory role to the meeting organisers.

The meeting featured the results presentations of twelve major critical care trials, which included investigations into nutrition, oxygen and fluid therapy, diaphragmatic pacing, mechanical ventilation, and intravenous rehydration in African children with gastroenteritis.

Commenting on the event, Professor Mac Sweeney said: “It’s wonderful to be able to bring the best critical care trials in the world to Belfast to announce their results. The meeting has been an overwhelming success, with superb science shared globally via our free livestream and multiple simultaneous publications in top tier medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA.”

The second Critical Care Reviews Meeting of 2025 will take place in Melbourne from 9 -10 December 2025 and will feature further exciting trial results within the field of critical care.
