Queen’s partners with Fine Point Films on documentary on Agreement 25 Conference delivery

Queen’s University Belfast has collaborated with Emmy-nominated studio Fine Point Films on a documentary short that tells the story of the people behind the delivery of the Agreement 25 conference hosted at Queen’s in April 2023.

Featuring unseen footage and interviews with global leaders - including Queen’s Chancellor, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton - as well as interviews with the University’s staff and students, Delivering the Impossible: Agreement 25 captures and celebrates the collaborative effort from across the University community that made possible the successful delivery of the high-profile and impactful international peace conference.

The film, which was directed and produced by Stephen Douds, was showcased at a special screening event hosted at the Queen’s Film Theatre (QFT) on Tuesday 5 December. The event included a panel discussion led by journalist and broadcaster Donna Traynor, reflecting on Agreement 25.

President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Ian Greer commented:

“The successful delivery of the Agreement 25 Conference was a remarkably proud moment for Queen’s. It was an honour to bring together prominent global figures to share their expertise in peace building as we marked the 25th anniversary of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. We are therefore delighted to partner with Fine Point Films on a documentary which captures this sense of pride and achievement. It is an important addition to our institutional archive.”

Based in Belfast, Fine Point Films’s filmography includes The Agreement, a landmark two-part RTÉ documentary series made in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast, as well as documentaries for international distribution such as Let the Canary Sing, a feature-length documentary on the life and music of Cyndi Lauper, and George Best: All By Himself for ESPN and BBC.

Trevor Birney, Delivering the Impossible: Agreement 25 Executive Producer and CEO at Fine Point Films, said:

“As a journalist, I covered the protracted negotiations that led to the Good Friday Agreement and was in the Kings Hall on the day of the referendum. Although it was 25 years ago, the events of 1998, and the bravery of both the politicians and the people of Northern Ireland, seem to become more significant every passing year.

“Fine Point Films was honoured to work with Queen’s University Belfast this year on this film chronicling their anniversary event, which managed to encapsulate perfectly the incredible mood of the moment.

“Congratulations to all those behind the event and who worked on the film.”

Ryan Feeney, Vice-President of Strategic Engagement and External Affairs, commented:

“Partnership and collaboration were at the core of our efforts in delivering such a large-scale and high-profile conference - both internally and externally. Celebrating and reflecting on the tremendous efforts of our staff and students in delivering Agreement 25 required an innovative approach and we are proud of the heartfelt and insightful film produced in partnership with Fine Point Films under the direction of Stephen Douds.”
