Period Dignity @ Queens
Period Dignity @ Queen’s aims to make period poverty in Queen’s University a thing of the past by supplying free period products in selected bathrooms throughout the campus.
Period poverty is a significant issue impacting millions of people around the world. And that includes the UK and Ireland. Studies have shown that in UK higher education at least 25% of women and people who menstruate have struggled to access or afford period products.
Using a grant from the Department for the Economy NI, the Students Union working with Student Wellbeing piloted free period products in bathrooms in One Elmwood, the McClay Library and the Graduate School. Our Athena Swan Champions also piloted free period products in bathrooms in their schools, paid for directly out of School budgets.
Following these successful pilots, the Queen’s Gender Initiative worked in partnership with the Estates Directorate to develop this initiative.
During the first year of the Scheme, we have increased the number of points of provision of free pads and tampons across the campus to 50, including in accessible bathrooms.

Period Dignity @ Queen’s is centrally funded by Queen’s University and managed by the Estates Directorate. If you have any feedback on the Scheme or vending units, please contact estates.helpdesk@qub.ac.uk
A limited amount of period products are also available in the Pantry (open term-time) which can be found in One Elmwood Student Centre. Please note that the Pantry is for the exclusive use of Queen’s students.
Off campus, free period products are readily available in every public library across Northern Ireland for anyone who needs them, including mobile libraries. For more information and library locations: Free Period Products
